Off of my friggin porch. Someone came up to my house and cut the lock on my damn porch.
I'm sure there is such a thing as bike insurance, but it probably would have cost about half as much my (cheapest) bike (in the store + flashy light + splash guard).
My neighborhood's pretty damned safe for the most part. Our old house in Durham, on the other hand, was slightly less so...which we determined after our windows were smashed and we were burglarized within a week of moving in...
i once had a bike stolen: it was locked by two chains to a bike rack, in a locked bike cage, in a locked underground parking garage. the dude who monitors this stuff showed me the video a few times. he was quite impressed.
i wasn't.
but don't lose faith in bikes. replacing it will be cheaper than a single tank of gas.
I definitely haven't given up on bikes...since losing my car a while back, my bike has been a lifeline and a liberator...it's just that I only have 1 month left in Cambridge...
Although in all fairness, the person who broke into Burch stole a jar of change, a PS2, and a box of cereal--ignoring all the computers and band equipment.
M., to quote you: False. They also stole ALL of my DVDs, including my rare import Bjork DVDs (!!?) and Playstation games.
You also remember when they stole my 50 dollar bike from the tree out front? There was a tiny little steel coil about half as wide as an electrical cable, and a huge padlock. And they cut the padlock.

That's a rotten thing to happen. Don't suppose there's such a thing as bike insurance.

makes you wonder how safe your neighborhood is, eh?
