Slowly...

30 Seats in the House?
South Dakota rejects the abortion law?
First Muslim Elected?
First woman speaker of the house?
An enormous fuck you to Bush?
Second black governor in history?
Schwarzenegger with a 30% margin mandate?

The three gay marriage bans and 5 pending are not so great. In fact they're hideous...but there's hope.

I'm no longer 100% cynical about the American electorate. It's down to 80% or so. 2004 nearly broke my faith in anything.

i like this paragraph from slate a lot:

"In fact, the best news of the 2006 elections is the opportunity it gives Democrats to earn the lasting support of the independents and disgruntled Republicans whose votes just dropped in our laps. Tuesday was the death knell for Rovism—the quaint and now fully discredited theory that majorities are built not by expanding support with ideas that work but by mobilizing extreme minorities with ideas that aren't meant to be enacted and wouldn't work if they did."

I like that paragraph too...although it's terrifying that it takes 6 years of disaster to even BEGIN on the path of recovery. It sucks that this is reactionary instead of even a remote semblance of proactive behavior.

As for being cynical...I'm definitely still cynical, but I just feel like, at least there's some proof that there's SOME life left in this democracy. That a push back is still possible in the face of gross hypocrisy, idiocy, mismanagement, and deceit.

Heh, I just saw. Awesome.

I wouldn't exactly call it morning in america (which I wouldn't do anyway, for obvious reasons), but I would say it's probably like, 2 or 3 am in America. Which isn't as snappy. But at least mildly metaphorically descriptive
