Advice to a Stupid Asshole.

So I was riding my bike down the street with my tax return paperwork in my pocket in order to mail it out today. When I got home to pick up my W-2s, I discovered that all of my paperwork had blown out of my pocket at some point and into the street.

Thus, my SSN, my address, phone number, and financial information is all floating around in an envelope somewhere in Cambridge. I'm a little bit concerned about what the information can be used for, particularly identity theft.

Anyone have any idea about what I can/should do? Do I just have to start tracking my credit history much more closely? Or what?

I'm sick of being a bicyclist in Boston. I'm ready for a motorcycle or a car. Jesus.

Edit: The Liquor Store found it. Phew!

P.S. Stupid Nike+ Website is not letting me post the cool little graphic, so I just have to do it by hand. 3.7 miles, 32:21, 8:44 per mile, 586 calories, squiggly line. Huzzah!

That sucks.

I guess just start tracking your credit history more closely. Sign up for an Experian account. I believe it is less than $50 and it may be well worth it. What you need to look out for is credit cards getting opened in your name. On a positive note, Boston is so rainy and dreary, perhaps the envelope will be unreadable by the time a would be crook stumbles upon it.

you can put a fraud alert on your credit report; that should force a double-check before any line of credit is opened for some time.

but i'm with da in thinking that things generally turn to shit in boston. (so less need to worry.)

ok, i am aware i should be sympathetic and offer advice, but why the hell were you carrying these documents in your pocket while riding a bike? how did they even fit in a pocket? i am imagining you somehow biking with a rolled up manilla envelope sticking out of a chest pocket. i mean...backpack? sorry, but these are questions i had to ask.

Someone found it.....thank god.

As for YOU Sarah, it was in my coat pocket in a normal sized envelope. It was not even sticking out, it was completely in, all 9 inches (that's what she said)......and only a tiny corner peeked out.

I also was just riding to the post office to deliver it, so putting just the envelope in a backpack seemed ridiculous.
